Annual roundups from summer grazing allotments begin every October, resulting in confused strays and domineering mother cows trying to get back together.
The $15-million project between Big Piney and LaBarge was completed in just over a year, with Wyoming Game and Fish and Wyoming Department of Transportation spearheading the much needed design and construction to protect mainly deer and pronghorn that use the range year-round. The wide-open landscape is still intact although with 34 miles of big-game fencing on both sides of the highway to funnel wildlife – and the occasional cow – to nine underpasses connecting one side to the other.
Tip Top Search and Rescue (SAR) manager Kenna Tanner provided this “missions” report of 21 incidents from Aug. 15 through Sept. 30 to the Board of Sublette County Commissioners at its regular meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 3.
The sale at the new Pinedale Town Hall followed a descending format, known as a “Dutch” auction. The auction opened at the town’s predetermined maximum price of $500,000 and dropped by $10,000 increments until the price reached the town’s minimum figure of $190,000 without a buyer.
The Sublette County School District No. 1 Board of Trustees recognized three pupils at Bondurant Elementary as Students of the Month for October.
The Board will review and make decisions concerning overall budget and projects for 2023. The meeting will take place from 1 p.m. to approximately 3 p.m.
Lisa Robertson created the Bondurant market’s (BAAM) concept to highlight the local vendors and their personalities with monthly markets that began in September at the Branding Iron Café, owned by Jennifer and Matt Accurso, who opened last summer with coffee and homemade empanadas.

The project includes nine wildlife crossing underpasses that Game and Fish says are already being used, plus 17 miles of wildlife fencing and almost 2 miles of road reconstruction. The project was conceived to protect mainly migrating mule deer and pronghorn to move under the open landscape and avoid wildlife-vehicle collisions.
Public works supervisor Todd Brown commented that his department preferred a gas-fueled Ford or Chevy. “Neither one complied with the specs.”
Networks of pathways are found throughout the county for bicycling, walking, horseback riding and running. They are designed for convenience, access and safety – but who is actually responsible for their maintenance was a question asked by commissioners at their previous Sept. 19 meeting.
The public is invited to join WYDOT and Game and Fish for a virtual ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Oct. 12.
The event catered to kids between the ages of 10 and 14. The morning kicked off with lessons on sighting-in the .22 long rifle at 50 yards. Making it to the Nationals is its own accomplishment, all the more impressive because 2023 is only Piros’ second full season competing in triathlons. To qualify for Nationals, athletes must participate in a minimum of three regional triathlons and rank in the top 15 percent in their region.
Sublette Center information sessions The Sublette Center and Sublette County Hospital District are hosting two information sessions in October regarding the upcoming hospital construction and its impact on both nursing home residents as well as apartment tenants. Each session is tailored to interested seniors and those who care for seniors and will follow a question-and-answer format. The first session is Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 4:30 p.m., in the Heritage Apartment Meeting Room. The second session is Monday, Oct. 23 at 4:30 p.m., in the Aspen Grove Meeting Room.
During operations, smoke may be visible from Bondurant, Big Piney, Pinedale and Jackson. Aerial resources will implement ignitions for a period of three to five days, with smoke expected for 1 to 2 days after ignitions.
Racers will compete for first, second and third place prizes in the kids’, women’s and men’s categories. One racer will be crowned as the event’s “best dressed,” so participants are encouraged to get creative with their outfits and costumes.
The half-marathon course is an out-and-back race between Pinedale and Fremont Lake. The 10K course begins at the Fremont Lake Lookout north of Pinedale and follows a downhill decent back to town. The 1-Mile Fun Run followed town streets, with the start and finish lines at Rendezvous Pointe.
Cosmetologist Shelby Kumar presented Mayor Shane Voss and councilmembers Dalin Hughes, Tawnya Miller, Kinsey Voss and Sierra Banks with a sketch of her proposal to install plumbing and replace the floor in the town’s adjacent building at 415 Budd Ave.
For kids, parents and potential leaders to learn what 4-H has to offer, Sublette County 4-H is having two open houses next week. The first is Wednesday, Oct. 4, 4 to 7 p.m. at the Sublette County Extension Office, 9660 Highway 191, Pinedale.
