Boys’ swim team gears up for State

GREEN RIVER – The Sublette County combined boys’ swim team took advantage of the Last Chance Meet hosted by Green River on Feb. 8 to drop times, achieve state-qualifying times and garner top-10 finishes in multiple events.

All-around solid performances by the boys at Green River set positive momentum for the team as athletes prepare for the 2024 3A State Swimming and Diving Championships in Laramie on Feb. 16-17.

Senior John Ruby posted state-qualifying times in both the 100-freestyle and 100-breaststroke at the Last Chance Meet, bringing the total number of events Ruby has qualified in throughout the season to seven. The senior previously qualified in the 50-, 200- and 500-freestyles, 100-butterfly and 200-individual medley.

Ruby snagged second place in the 100-freestyle at the Last Chance Meet, hitting the finish line with a time of 53.81 seconds, shaving 0.35 seconds off his seed time.

Ruby finished sixth in the 100-breaststroke, timing the event in at a new personal record of 1 minute, 15.24 seconds.

Junior Calleb Willson punched his ticket to state in the 100-breaststroke at Green River, picking up fifth place in the event at 1:14.95 and dropping nearly 2.5 seconds from his seed time.

Three other athletes on the Sublette County boys’ swim team qualified for state over the course of the season. Senior Andy DeClue captured state-qualifying times in seven events – the 50-, 100-, 200- and 500-freestyles, 100-backstroke, 100-butterfly and 200-individual medley.

Sophomore Kaden Day punched his state ticket in six events – the 50-, 200- and 500-freestyles, 100-backstroke, 100-butterfly and 200-individual medley.

Freshman Jared Hacklin qualified for state in both the 50-freestyle and 100-butterfly.

Last Chance top-10

DeClue obtained seventh place in the 50-freestyle, clocking in at 25.46 seconds.

Posting a time of 1:19.35 in the 100-breaststroke, Day placed ninth in the event.

In diving, freshman Lyle Morgan came in eighth place with a cumulative score of 117.70 points.

Hacklin picked up ninth place in the 200-individual medley, hitting the finish line in 2:37.70.

Relay top-10 highlights included a sixth-place finish for the 200-medley relay team. Sophomore Scotty Ring, junior Reuben Allen, Day and freshman Cactus Chrisman posted a time of 2:12.23 in the event.

Freshman Gage Scobey, DeClue, Hacklin and freshman Emmett Hansen took seventh place in the 200-medley relay at 2:13.28.

Freshmen Tucker Boyce, Christian Dennis, Carson Ruby and junior Nolan Orm placed eighth in the 200-medley relay with a time of 2:57.61.

In the 200-freestyle relay, freshman Gavin Bohnet, sophomore Kyle Donaldson, John Ruby and freshman Brayden Losik placed ninth, timing the event in at 1:51.95.

Bohnet, Donaldson, Hacklin and Losik secured ninth place in the 400-freestyle relay with a time of 4:22.28.

• 200-freestyle: Losik in 16th at 2:29.60 and junior Wyatt Hyde in 17th at 2:33.74.

• 200-individual medley: Dennis in 12th place at 3:10.79 and Allen in 13th at 3:18.43.

• 50-freestyle: Ring in 16th place at 26.71 seconds, Bohnet in 17th at 26.86, Carson Ruby in 20th at 27.27, Willson in 22nd at 27.66, Donaldson in 28th at 28.84, Scobey in 30th at 30.51, Chrisman in 33rd at 30.99, Losik in 34th at 31.14, Orm in 40th at 34.28, Hansen in 41st at 34.36, senior Logan Visser in 42nd at 34.73 and Boyce in 43rd at 41.82.

• 100-freestyle: DeClue in 11th place at 56.60 seconds, Day in 14th at 57.84 seconds, Bohnet in 21st at 59.90 seconds, Hacklin in 23rd at 1:00.99, Hyde in 30th at 1:04.09, Donaldson in 32nd at 1:04.84, Morgan in 34th at 1:06.23, Visser in 39th at 1:19.86 and Boyce in 40th at 1:33.89.

• 200-freestyle relay: Willson, Orm, Day and Allen in 11th place at 2:01.37 and Hyde, Morgan, Visser and Hansen in 13th at 2:07.10.

• 100-backstroke: Ring in 13th place at 1:09.70, Scobey in 17th at 1:12.23, Carson Ruby in 20th at 1:15.02, Dennis in 24th at 1:26.01 and Chrisman in 25th at 1:30.58.

• 100-breaststroke: Allen in 17th place at 1:33.69, Hansen in 18th at 1:35.61 and Orm in 20th at 1:56.75.
