As one of their timely topics at recent meetings, Sublette County commissioners discussed the Wyoming Game and Fish’s draft threat assessment for the potential Sublette Antelope Migration Corridor with county administrator Jeness Saxton to hone comments. On Dec. 19, Saxton asked commissioners Doug Vickrey, Tom Noble, chair Sam White, Mack Bradley and Dave Stephens how and when they wanted her to finalize and submit them.

Longtime Mayor Jim Robinson led the meeting until just before 6 p.m. when he planned to meet with the Sublette County Strategic Planning Committee at the Big Piney Town Hall the same night.

“Strategic planning is a process in which an organization’s leaders define their vision for the future and identify their organization’s goals and objectives. The process includes establishing the sequence in which those goals should be realized so that the organization can reach its stated vision,” according to several websites.

“Most of us take sensible actions over the winter to look after ourselves, but we also need to think about how to keep our pets safe,” said veterinary surgeon Rebecca MacMillan. “The chilly weather can be enjoyed safely with our furry companions as long as you take a few simple precautions.”

Alzheimer’s by the numbers
• More than 6.7 million people in the U.S. are living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia in 2023 – 55 million people around the world.
• About 1 in 9 people, or 11.3 percent, in the U.S. age 65 and older has Alzheimer’s dementia.

The collaboration brings an array of classes aimed at promoting lifelong learning, empowerment and social engagement among Wyoming’s older adults, especially during the challenging winter months. Some offerings are live sessions; others are recorded and available at any time. “Wyoming residents can access thousands of interactive classes taught by older adults to their peers on GetSetUp,” Clark said. “These classes can be a simple way to connect with others from the comfort and safety of one’s home.”

After 45 years as a nonprofit organization, the Sublette Center now merges with the Sublette County Hospital District to combine the two organizations and continue to be of service to seniors in our community. This historic merger unites healthcare under one umbrella within the county.

The program provides a $5,000 stipend for a 10-week work experience, which is made possible by funding through the USDA Beginning Farmers and Ranchers grant. Eligible applicants are 18 years or older, identify as ready to begin farming or ranching and have been involved in managing their own farm or ranch enterprise for less than 10 years.

Volunteer firefighters come in all shapes, sizes, ages and genders. Retirees, teachers, industrial workers, business owners, health-care workers, retail sales workers, laborers, administrative professionals, ranchers, students and many other professions are represented on the fire department. We have several members who have retired from their careers and joined the fire department as a means to stay active in the community. We also have several junior firefighter cadets who gain valuable experience and learn about civic responsibility. Everyone has skills that are important and beneficial as a volunteer firefighter.

This annual closure is necessary to protect elk, moose, pronghorn and mule deer from disruptive human activities during the difficult winter months, which can increase the mortality rate for these animals.

Cole counts wapiti as they move onto the refuge each winter. Typically, at the end of December there are some 4,500 elk munching irrigated grasses on the southern half of the 24,700-acre refuge. But as of Wednesday, Cole was counting only about 3,200 elk in that area.

“The focus will be clouds, rainbows, aurora borealis, the Milky Way and stars – all interesting things you see in the sky,” he said.

Some of the most “unusual birds” counted around Sublette County historically include the Woodhouse’s scrub jay, varied thrush and Harris’s sparrows.

“Some ordinances are well over 40 years old,” the sheriff said. “Some have been recodified but a lot have not been revised.”

The Sublette County Predator Board’s mission is to protect the public health and livestock ranchers with predator control – ravens, magpies, coyotes, starlings and other property-destructive animals and birds. It also deals with predator zone wolves.
