Local cited for suspected DUI during Boulder Roll

Posted

SUBLETTE COUNTY — Although the 7th Annual Boulder Roll raised more than $11,000 for suicide awareness and prevention in Sublette County, the event ended badly for one participant. Terry L. Mahaffey, of Big Piney, was arrested by the Wyoming Highway Patrol for a suspected DUI after he failed to negotiate a curve on his 2016 Harley Davidson trike — a three-wheeled motorcycle — and went over the edge of Paradise Road near Boulder around 5:10 p.m. on Saturday, June 10. An hour later, WHP Trooper Jason Moller cited Mahaffey for a DUI involving alcohol and controlled substances.

WHP Capt. and District Three Commander Klief Guenther said Mahaffey suffered only minor injuries, including to his head, which was fortunate given, “he had a helmet but wasn’t wearing it.”

“Between the odor of alcohol, failure to negotiate the curve and his admittance of drinking, we’re pretty sure he was over the legal limit,” Guenther said on Monday, noting WHP is still awaiting the lab results of a blood alcohol test performed by medical personnel after Mahaffey was taken to the hospital.

Mahaffey's arraignment is scheduled for July 13 in Sublette County Circuit Court.

During the 2023 Boulder Roll, participants stopped off at a half-dozen bars in Sublette County and La Barge, where they each drew a card. Participants with the best and worst poker hands won prizes at the end of the day. The group of more than 100 bikers was headed to the final stop of the day, at the Boulder Bar & Grill, when the crash occurred.

**Clarification:

The June 16 Pinedale Roundup article titled “Local cited for suspected DUI during Boulder Roll” mentions that “participants stopped off at a half-dozen bars in Sublette County and La Barge, where they each drew a card. Participants with the best and worst poker hands won prizes at the end of the day.” A series of recent posts made to the Boulder Roll Facebook Group indicate that some people interpreted this sentence as an insinuation that all participants in the Boulder Roll consumed alcohol at the stop locations. We regret that interpretation and wish to clarify that participants stopped at these locations to pick up a card for their poker hands. Only one participant of the Boulder Roll, the individual identified in the article as Terry L. Mahffey, of Big Piney, was cited after the June 10 crash. Wyoming Highway Patrol Capt. Klief Guenther said at that time, “Between the odor of alcohol, failure to negotiate the curve and his admittance of drinking,” troopers with the Wyoming Highway Patrol were “pretty sure (Mahaffey) was over the legal limit.”

He was cited for “driving under the influence of combined alcohol and controlled substance,” and is scheduled for an arraignment in Sublette County Circuit Court on July 13. Like everyone accused of a crime in the United States, Mahaffey is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Mahaffey was participating in the Boulder Roll at the time that his trike went off of the side of Paradise Road. The crash was visible from Highway 191 and resulted in a 90-minute delay to the fundraising event.

In an effort not to allow the alleged actions of one individual to undermine the entire fundraiser, we chose to publish the article titled “Boulder Roll bikers raise thousands for suicide prevention,” also in the June 16 Pinedale Roundup.

All DUI citations and the individuals who receive them in Sublette County are named each week in the Circuit Court roundup. While we hope we never have to cover such an unfortunate situation again, we wish to emphasize that any fundraising event interrupted by a motor vehicle or other similar crash linked to alcohol or controlled substances will be reported as news.
