Wealth is more than money

Dear Editor,

I recently received several emails in support of Jackson Fork Resort. There were statements made in each regarding the wealth in Sublette County. This particular message covers the topic established by most. I feel compelled to answer. Before I start, I want to make it abundantly clear that this is not from me as a county commissioner, but from me as a long-time Sublette County resident. The emails I received extolled the virtues of Mr. Joe Ricketts; with his acquisition of White Pine ski area, his donation to the hospital board and his donation to the Pinedale Aquatic Center. I also commend Mr. Ricketts for these endeavors in Sublette County. My comments are directed to the end of one particular email (which follows the theme of many) and I quote the author, “I just want to remind everyone that we have a lot of wealth in this community that does nothing to make positive changes. Most of them are here for brief periods, do not donate to anything locally and don’t do much to contribute to our community.”
This last statement obviously comes from people who don’t know the temperature of Sublette County. I’ve had the opportunity, over the years, to work with some very wealthy individuals who have given a lot to this county. They haven’t wanted notoriety, they have not put their pictures in the paper saying, hey, here I am! They just have come to Sublette County because of what the county offers them; they haven’t tried to change it into something that goes against the texture of this community. When one speaks of wealth you always think of money, but wealth can be thought of in a myriad of ways; you don't have to have a huge bank account to be able to help a neighbor out in time of need. This community, overall, is very giving. We support many things and many endeavors to the best of our own wealth; that may be a $10 ticket to a high school play or a chance to win a snowmachine from the Pinedale Lions Club raffle. I think the greatest wealth we each have is our ability to have compassion.

Furthermore, I cannot imagine Mr. Rickets condoning a statement like his supporters have made. My guess is Mr. Ricketts has way more class than to be a party to that statement. I want to reiterate this letter is from me as an individual, not as a county commissioner. Thank you and may God bless.
