JACKSON — The Special Olympics Wyoming 2024 State Winter Games were held in Jackson Feb. 27-29. Two local athletes, Ian Jones of Big Piney and Scott Covill of Pinedale, represented Sublette County in cross-country skiing. The dedicated Gayle Hamner coaches both boys. Jones and Covill both improved their times, finishing their races faster than during the Special Olympics Wyoming 2024 Area Games held on Feb. 2.
Opening Ceremonies
The 2024 Special Olympics Winter Games began with the Opening Ceremonies at Jackson Hole High School on the evening of March 27, followed by breakfast at the Elks Lodge.
Time trials
Time trials at the Summit High School Fields began early on a chilly Wednesday morning. The afternoon saw athletes ski their 100-meter race, followed by the Victory Banquet and Totally 80s Dance at the Snow King Resort. Jones shaved nearly a minute off his time in the 100-meter, finishing in 3:56.4 as compared to 4:37 at the Area Games.
Scott Covill also had a fantastic run in the 100-meter at the State Games, crossing the finish line in 3:25.3 to earn gold, compared to 5:53 in the same event at the Area Games.
Thursday morning the Elks Lodge provided another breakfast before the athletes skied the 50-meter and 25-meter events. Jones earned gold in the division 2 25-meter race, completing the event in 52.6, followed by Covill in second place in 1:09. Covill snagged gold for division 1 in the 50-meter with a time of 1:43. Jones took home a silver medal for finishing the 50-meter race in 1:35.
They managed to beat the storm home. “Special thanks to Gayle Hamner for making it happen!” said Liz Covill.
