Swimmers put in work versus Kemmerer

BIG PINEY – The Sublette County swimming team took on Kemmerer, the smallest team in the state, Thursday, Oct. 5, during the Punchers' Homecoming. The team score wasn't important to the swimmers, but getting in some quality work was.

In the 200-yard freestyle, for example, nine Sublette swimmers competed against one Kemmerer girl.

Kemmerer may have a small squad, but the Rangers provided plenty of challenge. Kemmerer won five of the 12 events and had top-three finishes in six others.

"It was like a real work meet," Sublette head coach Gregory Gray said. "Everybody worked and everybody got to do something different."

The Sublette girls swam in a lot of races they don't normally compete in, but the team still won the meet, 113-72.

"The girls had a good time doing something different as well as having the challenge of swimming tired," Gray said.

Emma Rogers won the 200 free in 2 minutes, 39.64 seconds and the 100 fly (1:24.77).

McKenzi Davison won the 50 free (29.16) and the 100 free (1:08.10).

Darbie Paulson won the 1-meter diving competition with 144.80 points.

Sublette's other first-place finishes were in relay races.

Davison, Natalie Hunt, Rogers and Israel Seeman finished first in the 200-free relay (2:02.79) and the 400-free relay (4:31.80).

Other swimmers with top-three individual finishes included Hayden Thoman (200 free, 100 fly), Kaylee Day (200 individual medley, 100 back), Paige Nielson (200 individual medley, 400 free), Adalyn Bennett (50 free, 100 free), Kylee Neubauer (diving), Cassidy Espenscheid (100 free, 100 breast), Seeman (400 free) and Hunt (100 back, 100 breast).

Meleah Covill, Jennifer Wheeler, Reese Noble, Loveena Winkelkotter, Hailey Noble, Britty Hill and Kinlee Green also swam on relays that finished in the top-three.

Sublette will continue to work hard the next couple weeks before backing off a little for the state championships.

"The next two weeks will be the hardest of the season," Gray said. "We'll do as much mileage as possible and then back off so they can recover for state."

The last two weeks of the season, before state, the girls will get to sleep in. The team won't have morning practices, but will focus on sharpening everything.

On Friday, Sublette will host Jackson and Evanston in Pinedale at 4 p.m.

"It should be a close meet with hopefully more qualifying times coming," Gray said.
