'Sid' A. Roberts

Sydney “Sid” Allen Roberts was born on May 23, 1935, in Daniel, Wyo., to Cora Elizabeth Wilson and Louis Walton Roberts.

He joined brother Dick and sister Barbara. Not long after his birth, the family moved to Merna, where the family ranched and his father had a small store and was the postmaster. After they moved to Merna, Sid’s younger brother Steve was born.

When Sid was only 9 years old, they lost his father Louis. Sid spent his youth at the ranch and spent a lot of wonderful times with Buck Baker up on Beaver. He enjoyed working with livestock, especially breaking young colts.

Sid’s early grades of school were spent in the one-room schoolhouse in Merna, taught by his mother Cora. At the age of 10, the family was out of meat, so Sid shot a moose right from the door of the schoolhouse. His love of hunting continued through the years and he went on many memorable hunts with friends, including Bud Davison.

In 1953, he married Darlene Pryde. To this union were born two sons – Jack and Shane. He worked many jobs in construction and the oilfield, but always ended up driving truck.

In 1969, he married Linda Hayes Bircher and became stepfather to her two sons – Jerry and Del. Two years later, daughter Tana joined the family.

Sid drove truck for over 40 years, traveling over 3.5 million miles, all accident-free. He started with Johnson Trucking, later working for Frontier Freight Lines, Milne Truck Lines and Willig Freight Lines, where he retired pulling triples. After retirement, Sid and Linda enjoyed traveling and rock hunting, spending winters in Yuma, Ariz.

Sid passed away on Aug. 7, 2017, in Medford, Ore., after three years of poor health.

He is survived by his wife Linda, sons Jack (Vera) and Shane (Jeannie) Roberts of Pinedale, daughter Tana (Russell) Potter of Lebo, Kan., stepsons Jerry (Diane) Bircher of Alpine, Wyo., and Del (Jill) Bircher of South Jordan, Utah, brother Steve (Tina) Roberts of Pinedale, nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held on Aug. 25, 2017, at the Pinedale Cemetery at 11 a.m., with a memorial dinner following at the Daniel Schoolhouse. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Sublette Center would be greatly appreciated.
