Lady Wranglers close season with win

PINEDALE – The Lady Wrangler soccer team closed out the season with a doubleheader against Lyman and Mountain on May 14 and 15.

During a pitched battle against the Eagles on Friday, Pinedale edged ahead in the second half to score a 2-1 victory. Seniors Rita Mata and Alaine Liserio shot in the goals for Pinedale.

“Lyman scored first in the varsity game, but we came back to win,” said head coach Shanda Jensen. “The girls played well and fought hard to come back.”

Despite heavy pressure by the Lady Wrangler defense on Saturday, Mountain View managed to slip through and score twice to carry the game, 2-0.

Pinedale offense struck inside Mountain View territory with some kicks that came close to landing inside the net. Liserio made two shots on goal and junior Olivia Edwards one.

Senior Preslie Mecham played goalie and caught seven saves during the match against Mountain View.

The Pinedale girls’ soccer team finished out the season with 12 goals. Edwards led with three goals. Liserio and Mata both added two goals to the tally. Freshman Anna Lehr, senior Sydney Jensen, senior Reese Noble, sophomore Erin Fogerty and junior Alena Mika each scored a goal during the season.

Mecham totaled 80 saves over the season including Mountain View (Lyman stats were not available at press time). Liserio served as goalie during several games and caught 35 season saves. Junior Cora Murphy subbed in as goalie and made four saves.

Pinedale’s junior varsity squad fought Lyman to a 1-1 tie on Friday. Senior Haley Rutsch scored the goal for the Lady Wranglers.

Pinedale’s JV fell to Mountain View in a close match, 3-2, on Saturday. Junior Hailee Henry and Murphy scored for Pinedale.

Coach Jensen was pleased with the effort the team put in over the season and looks forward to hitting the turf again next year.

“It was great to be able to play this season,” she added. “The girls worked really hard and I hope to continue the momentum we built this season into next year.”
