PINEDALE – Fremont Lake’s mood changes quickly. Placid, clear water can turn into churning whitecaps and gale-force wind in the blink of an eye.

The 52nd annual Sailing Regatta on Fremont Lake opened on Saturday, Aug. 15, to peaceful skies. Boats struggled to make the crossing with a lack of breeze when the first race started. The wind gradually picked up for the next races that afternoon.

Nature unleashed its fury on Sunday as storms tore down from the Wind Rivers.

“The wind this year, before and after racing on Sunday, made for some very challenging conditions on Fremont Lake – not just for sailboats, but for every boat in the water,” said event organizer Jason Essington.

The Pinedale Lions Club sponsored the event and supplied volunteers to keep the race running and help boats return to safety on Sunday.

“Our safety boat, driven by Jeff Goltz, and assisted at times by Randy Bick and John Paravicini went above and beyond, venturing back out into the storms to bring additional boats home,” Essington stated.

Lakeside Lodge hosted the regatta.

“Lakeside Lodge went out of their way to accommodate everyone with safe harbor,” Essington said. “Several slip owners were gracious enough to vacate their space in the marina this weekend which allowed additional space for sailboats. This also helped when the storms blew through and was greatly appreciated by all participants.”

Seventeen teams entered the 2021 Sailing Regatta on Fremont Lake, including 13 keelboats or cruisers, three centerboards or dinghies and one catamaran.

The Roundup thanks Goltz for allowing a photographer to tag along on Saturday.
