A send-off for Pobanz

Posted: Thursday, Jan 3rd, 2013

I can understand why you continue to run the column by Ross Pobanz in this Republican-dominated community. It has to increase your subscriptions. In his latest ranting (Dec. 28), he blames Obama’s election on the “African Americans, Hispanics, unions, government dependents and single women” all because of their desire to get “free stuff.”

I find it interesting he did not mention married women or white voters in general. Many white voters and married women voted for Obama.

It is obvious he does not like our social programs of education, food, shelter and health care for the poor. He calls this “free stuff.” Social programs are a good measure of how socialistic a country is and of how caring it is for the less fortunate of its citizens. I am proud to live in a country that makes an attempt to provide this care, and I am not reluctant to call it socialism. I believe that capitalism and socialism are alive and well here in the United States. Man is a social being. Society is a collection of social beings.

Pobanz had better get used to the idea that we voters will always choose what we think is best for the underdogs and not for racists or misogynists or homophobes or representatives of the wealthy classes who want inordinate tax breaks for the rich or ridiculous subsidies for their profit-making companies.

The title for his column should be “Sour Grapes” instead of “Circumnavigating the Globe.” He was probably much better at tacking than he is at attacking. n
