Man in custody after standoff

PINEDALE – A local man is in the Sublette County Detention Center following an hour-long standoff with 10 officers, with rifles drawn, after the defendant allegedly refused to leave a home on North Fremont Avenue at 4:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Gary Eastwood Jr. is charged with false imprisonment, interfering with a peace officer, breach of peace and property destruction, and Eastwood also has an outstanding warrant out for his arrest for aggravated assault in Fremont County, according to a Sublette County Sheriff’s Office police report filed by the responding deputy Karson Turner.

In the report, Turner said he was dispatched to a “possible disturbance” on North Fremont Avenue.

Neighbors had reported “shouting, a female crying, horns honking and loud banging noises” coming from a residence for up to two hours.

Upon entering the scene, Turner reported hearing a female “hysterically crying.” When he looked into the house and asked the woman to open the door, she shook her head in a “no fashion,” the report states.

Turner then noticed Eastwood standing in front of the door. The deputy asked Eastwood to open the door, which he allegedly refused. Turner also noted the house had significant damage.

After asking the male and female in the house to open the door more than 10 times, Eastwood moved to the back of the house and Turner retreated from the scene for safety.

“It is known to me from prior contacts that Gary [Eastwood] has a .40 Smith and Wesson pistol,” Turner stated in the report.

After nine other officers responded to the scene, many of which had to be called in from their nearby residences, the suspect was apprehended trying to move out of the back of the home, which officers had covered.

Upon entering the home, officers noticed a dresser in front of the door that had to be removed for entry into the front of the residence. The officers also found a “very young female infant child.”

In interviews, the female told officers that she and the suspect share the child but had been broken up for a number of weeks.

Eastwood became “enraged” after learning of the female’s relationship with another individual when she and Eastwood had been broken up.

At this point, Eastwood “went off” and used a “crystal skull” bottle to throw at the walls. He also split a door in half and ripped it off the hinges, and the woman’s car was damaged.

The woman said the baby was in its room sleeping during the incidents, and the baby’s room had not been damaged, Turner reported. The woman also said Eastwood did not touch her during the incident.

The woman was “very emotional” and “hysterical” during much of the interview, the report states, and she claimed to have been scared to come to the door due to Eastwood’s presence.

Eastwood “denied even being at the residence this evening,” Turner stated in the report. “Gary [Eastwood] stated that he was just walking home from the bar and saw us at his house.”

Turner ended the interview and Eastwood was transported to the jail when “it was clear that Gary [Eastwood] was not going to be truthful with me.”

Deputies took photos of the scene and the suspect, and the woman was referred to the Sexual Assault and Family Violence Task Force before the call was cleared.
