Sommersí update

Posted: Thursday, Feb 21st, 2013

Hello, Sublette County. In Cheyenne last week, Senate File 85, the bill that would have created a preference point system for antelope, deer and elk, died on third reading. I voted against the bill, as most of the feedback I received was in opposition to this idea. Most of the concern revolved around whether young hunters would have equal access to the highly sought-after areas. Most hunters agreed a preference point system was needed for big horn sheep and moose, those once-in-a-lifetime hunts, as opposed to those species that have general license areas associated with them.

Also on last Thursday, the fuel tax bill passed the Senate, and is headed for the Governorís desk.

Last Friday, we passed seven bills through the house on final reading, including Senate File 87, which would allow your proof of motor vehicle insurance to be in an electronic format. In other words, you will be able to download an app to your smart phone, if the insurance company provides the feature, which will allow you to easily acquire and carry your proof of insurance. Senate File 114, which would have stiffened the penalty for aggravated assault on a health worker failed because the change in penalty was not viewed as being an effective tool to dissuade those people who are under the influence of a controlled substance or intoxicated from harming a health care worker. I voted in favor of this bill, and it is not the only bill passed this session that was more about a statement, as opposed to solid legislation. The bill would have done no harm and would have shown health care providers that we understand their sacrifices.

Today, we will hear two compressed natural gas incentive bills dealing with conversion of state government fleets and development of fueling stations, both of which I support. One is Senate File 52, and I will be floor managing in Committee of the Whole for that vote. n
