Response to Cornelius Kelly

Posted: Thursday, Jan 10th, 2013

I should like to begin this letter by stating that I have extremely fond memories of your dear wife being one of my favorite librarians as a child. And though I know nothing of your present circumstances, I pray she is well.

I am one of the much-despised citizens that you refer to in your letter, although I am not sure I would refer to myself as a Republican, though I am registered as such. I am in no uncertain terms however, a firm conservative and fiercely in support of the independent spirit this great country was founded on.

I do not support government socialism in this country, period. That is not to say that I do not think that our fellow Americans who are truly in need, should not have some place to turn to for help, but there certainly does seem to be a disproportionate number of people considered poor and needy these days. There used to be shame attached to welfare, but no longer. And that is where the problem lies.

There is a very wise saying in a very old book that no one wants to mention the name of any longer, for fear of being politically incorrect (something I personally have no problem not worrying about), that basically says “If you don't work, you don't eat.” Another verse would be “The workman is worthy of his hire.” We have seemed to have conveniently forgotten these simple truths, and prefer instead to have some of the people of this country work to support the rest of the country. This is not only un-American, it is immoral. Laid bare, it is thievery. Now, if you want to attach some other term to it, by all means, feel free to do so, but a rose by any other name is still a rose.

And in closing, let us remember the Puritan experiment in this country with socialism, and the fact that it did not long last. There were reasons for that.

Sharon Moreno, Big Piney
