I was perplexed when I read Pinedale Town Councilman Chris House’s quoted remark in your 11/30/2012 article about plowing the road to the new elementary school.
Regarding the plowing of BloomField Avenue, councilman House said, “It’s cheaper for the town to do it.” I could not help wondering, cheaper for whom?
Let’s do some quick arithmetic. For the previous two winters combined, the Pinedale school district gave the town $12,500 for the snowplowing. According to numbers from Pinedale Maintenance Director, the actual cost to the town over the two years was $42,840 ($38,930 in 2010-11 and $3,910 in 2011-12). That means the mayor and town council have donated $30,340 of our money as a subsidy or bailout of Haymaker Land Holdings LLC, the property owner.
Chris House is right. It is cheaper for the town to do the plowing. Cheaper for the BloomField developer. n
