Running for water

Posted: Thursday, Jun 28th, 2012

It’s time to start thinking about training for the Pinedale Half Marathon and 10K. If you’re lacking motivation or need some encouragement for those long runs, come join us for some group runs. We are getting together a team of runners to train and raise money to drill a water well in Africa through Team World Vision. Our eyes have been opened to the lack of basic needs and the vast expanse of the problem.

Did you know nearly one billion people go without clean water every day? Families drink dirty water because it’s all they have. They need it to survive, but dirty water and poor sanitation are also killing them. More than 4,000 children die each day from dirty water. Infections from poor sanitation and hygiene affect two billion people and 3.75 million people die each year from water-related causes.

However, when a community gains access to clean water, child mortality rates drop by half; children can attend school instead of looking for water; women can care for their families instead of gathering water; the amount of disease decreases and crops and livestock thrive.

Now that you are aware of the problem, would you please join us in making an impact for a community in Africa? The cost of a water well and required sanitation supplies and training that services about 300 people is $14,000. Our goal is to raise this as a team. We want to get our friends and family involved in the fundraising through supporting us as we run or walk the Pinedale Half Marathon or 10K.

Our first team run will be June 30 at Shelter Park at 7:30 a.m. We will have miles marked and will provide drinks after the run. If you have any questions, please feel free to email Carrie at mcbecker@centurytel.net or Deanna at deannafildey@ gmail.com. If you want any more information about World Vision check out their website at www.teamworldvision.org.

If you would like to help but can’t participate in the race, you can give a donation on the team’s behalf by contacting Carrie or Deanna.
