Teresa Leigh (Ditton) Herbert

Posted: Thursday, Sep 26th, 2013

Teresa was born Sept. 28, 1959, in Jackson to Sharon (Schooley) and Duane Ditton. She attended school in Pinedale and married her high-school sweetheart, Mike Herbert, in 1976. They later divorced. Teresa has six children: Chris Herbert and Corey Vail of Austin, Texas; stepchildren Forrest, Emerald, Jana and Victor McDaniels, all of Colorado. She has three grandchildren, Lil’ Teresa Herbert, Zoe and Ari Vail of Austin.

Teresa served her country for six years in the U.S. Army from May 1980 to May 1986. She worked as a travel agent in many parts of the country, also as concierge of a couple of big motels in Colorado Springs and Durango, Colo. She was a talented painter and writer. She loved camping and the beach and most of all her family. She was a wonderful mother and dear friend to so many. She was an avid rock hound, always packing home rocks. She will be greatly missed by all.

She and Mike Herbert remarried in August of 2002. Teresa passed away at the V.A. Hospital in Long Beach, Calif., on June 12 after a long hard battle with autoimmune hepatitis.

She is survived by her husband Mike Herbert, of Long Beach; children Chris (Krystal) Herbert, Corey (Joshua) Vail of Austin; Forrest, Emerald, Jana and Victor McDaniels of Colorado; grandchildren Lil’ Teresa Herbert and Zoe and Ari Vail; mother and step-father Sharon (Courtney) Davis of Pinedale; siblings Rick Ditton, Lila Golden and Mike (Jeannie) Davis; aunt Sue Johansen; uncles Ron (Becky) Schooley of Woods Cross, Utah and Don (Mary Ellen) Schooley of Pinedale and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her father Duane Ditton, grandparents Harold and Berniece Schooley and Alfred and Thelma Ditton; aunt Karen Schooley, uncles Roger Edwards and Bert Layland Sr. and cousin Lil’ Bert Layland.

A military graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sept. 28 at the Pinedale Cemetery.

A free spirit

Even though you are no longer with us,

We can see you everywhere,

All we have to do is look.

I'll bet we see you there.

In the butterfly who flits around

A hummingbird in flight,

In a chipmunk scurrying on the ground

Or a night hawk in the night.

In the squirrel who leaps from the tree tops,

Or the bees that buzz around.

Your free spirit is within them

We just have to look around.

In the bunny’s twitchy little nose,

Your mischief lingers near.

Your sparkling show of spirit

In the brown eyes of a deer.

You’re in each of these and everyone

The creatures we’ve discussed.

No matter what form they’re in,

They bring you close to us.

So Teres’ I know we’ll all see you

In another time and place.

As soon as God releases us

From our Earthly Phase.

In the mean time,

We’ll just watch you

In the creatures here below

And know that you’re still with us

No matter where we go.

For my niece Teresa Herbert
