Lady Punchers defeat Lady Pronghorns at home

BIG PINEY — The Big Piney High School (BPHS) Lady Punchers’ varsity basketball team maintains a 7-10 overall record and a 2-1 quadrant record for the 2A Southwest Conference heading into the 10th week of the season.

On Tuesday, Jan. 30, the Lady Punchers overcame the Farson-Eden Lady Pronghorns in a 66-44 upset. Although the Lady Punchers took a bit to build momentum, the team turned on the intensity in the second quarter, scoring 22 points. The team had 49 rebounds, seven assists and 18 steals. Ultimately the Pronghorn could not contend with the Lady Punchers’ give-and-go strategy coupled with fast breaks throughout the game.

In the first quarter, Big Piney led Farson by only 1 point, 14-15. Senior Sienna Whiterock scored 2 points, sophomore Lizzy Brandt made 4 points, junior Micah Strong secured 4 points, sophomore Brylie Bailey made 4 points and junior Chelsea Wright scored 1 point in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, sophomore Kodee Green scored 5 points, Whiterock netted 5 points, junior Kendra Willoughby scored 2 points, Brandt made 4 points, Strong 2 points and Wright 1 point. Big Piney led at the end of the second quarter, 37-19.

In the third quarter, Greene added another 6 points, Brandt contributed 4 points and Bailey added 2 points, expanding the Lady Punchers’ lead, 49-32.

In the fourth quarter, Greene, Whiterock, junior Jolynn Jones, Bailey and Wright each contributed 2 points and Strong added 7 points, securing the Lady Punchers’ win over the Lady Pronghorns, 66-44.

Wind River High School

On Friday, Feb. 2, the Lady Punchers lost the nonconference game against the Wind River High School Cougars, 45-65.

The Lady Punchers’ basketball team takes on conference opponent Wyoming Indian High School at 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 10, in Ethete.
